Pathogen Surveillance

Wastewater-based Multi-Pathogen Surveillance

The Multi-Pathogen Surveillance project is a collaborative initiative between our laboratory and the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) aimed at monitoring a wide range of infectious pathogens in wastewater. This approach provides valuable epidemiological insights by detecting and tracking disease-causing microorganisms at a community level.

Through routine wastewater sampling and advanced molecular detection techniques, we monitor the prevalence and trends of various pathogens, including SARS-CoV-2, Salmonella, Cholera, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Shigella, Human Adenovirus, Norovirus, Rotavirus, Influenza, Hepatitis, Sapovirus, and more.

Wastewater-based surveillance is a powerful tool for early disease detection, outbreak preparedness, and public health response. This research helps guide targeted interventions and informs national and global health strategies by identifying emerging health threats in real-time.

Our collaboration with SAMRC strengthens the impact of this initiative, ensuring that our findings contribute to evidence-based decision-making and improved public health policies across South Africa.
